2 August 2027 Solar Eclipse: Where to Watch

The total solar eclipse on 2 August 2027 will cross southern Spain, North Africa and parts of the Middle East. Across much of Europe, observers outside the path of totality will see a partial eclipse. Your exact location determines what you will see and when.

Planning after the 12 August 2026 eclipse? Start with a new location check: the 2027 path is different. A place that experienced totality in 2026 is not automatically a total-eclipse destination in 2027.

Where will the 2027 solar eclipse be visible?

  • Southern Spain: totality reaches part of the south. Check your exact town or viewing site against the path boundaries before booking.
  • North Africa: the path crosses parts of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. Conditions and eclipse duration vary by location.
  • The Middle East: parts of Saudi Arabia and Yemen lie along the total-eclipse path.
  • Much of Europe: a partial eclipse is visible outside the narrow totality path. Being in a country crossed by totality does not mean every location in that country sees a total eclipse.

How long will totality last?

NASA’s calculation gives a maximum duration of approximately 6 minutes 23 seconds somewhere along the path. This is the event maximum, not a duration to expect everywhere. Your own viewing time may be much shorter, particularly near a path boundary.

The NASA path map and local circumstances distinguish the partial phases from totality. Check which time standard a prediction uses before putting it in your calendar.

Planning your viewing location

  1. Choose the experience: travel into the path for totality, or plan to observe the partial eclipse from a suitable location closer to home.
  2. Check the exact site: verify the coordinates, eclipse type and local timings. Country and city summaries are only a starting point.
  3. Check practical access: confirm opening hours, permissions, transport, shade and facilities with the site operator.
  4. Plan for conditions: review local climate information when choosing a destination, then use current weather forecasts close to the event.
  5. Prepare your equipment: count viewers, inspect glasses and read their instructions before the day.

Do I need eclipse glasses for 2 August 2027?

For direct viewing of the partial phases, use eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer that meets ISO 12312-2. Ordinary sunglasses are unsuitable. Outside the path of totality, proper solar eye protection is required throughout direct viewing.

Only inside the totality path, while the Sun’s bright face is completely covered, can you observe without eclipse glasses. Put them back on as soon as any bright part of the Sun reappears. Inspect viewers before use, discard damaged ones and supervise children.

Do not look through a camera, binoculars or telescope while wearing eclipse glasses. Optical equipment requires an appropriate solar filter secured over the front of the instrument and expert guidance. Read NASA’s eclipse viewing safety guidance before observing.
