Where to watch the 2026 total solar eclipse in Tortosa & the Ebre
Tortosa and the lower Ebre sit close to the central line of the 2026 path, giving southern Catalunya its longest totality — well over a minute and a half, with the wide open delta nearby for an uninterrupted western horizon.
Tortosa and the lower Ebre sit close to the central line of the 2026 path, giving southern Catalunya its longest totality — well over a minute and a half, with the wide open delta nearby for an uninterrupted western horizon.
Below: Tortosa's exact timings, the delta and river viewpoints that suit a very low Sun, how this compares with the Tarragona coast, and the local terrain to avoid.
La sequenza temporale
Quando avviene l’eclissi
Totality is centred on ~20:30 CEST with the Sun only about 5° above the west-northwest horizon, so an open low sightline in that direction matters more than anything else. The Sun sets shortly after, around 21:00.
Dove posizionarsi
I migliori posti per osservare
Delta de l'Ebre — open rice plains
Flat · wide openThe delta is table-flat for kilometres, with rice paddies, lagoons and no relief whatsoever. For a Sun under 5 degrees this is close to ideal, and the water can mirror the eclipsed Sun.
DirectionsCastell de la Suda viewpoint, Tortosa
Elevated · in townThe castle above Tortosa is the best in-town option, lifting you above the rooftops for a view along the valley. Verify the western ridge does not intrude from where you stand.
DirectionsAmposta and the river mouth
Riverside · openDownstream at Amposta the valley opens fully into the delta. Easy access, open sky and a clear westward view — a good balance of convenience and sightline.
DirectionsPunta del Fangar / delta beaches
Coastal · remoteThe sand spits at the delta's edge are wild and completely open. Remote, exposed, and about as unobstructed as Spain gets — bring everything you need.
DirectionsAvoid the Ports massif to the west
What to avoidThe mountains west of Tortosa are spectacular but sit exactly in the direction of the eclipsed Sun. Watching from among them risks the ridge hiding the event entirely — stay east of them, on the plain.
DirectionsCheck the official regional eclipse pages and local council announcements closer to the date — many towns on the path are organising designated viewing sites with capacity limits.

Le previsioni meteo
Il cielo sarà sereno?
The lower Ebro is hot and dry in August with generally clear evenings, and the delta offers some of the flattest, most open ground anywhere on the Spanish path.
Tortosa itself sits in a river valley with hills close on both sides, and the Sun is under 5 degrees up.
Getting out of the valley — downstream to the delta or up onto a terrace — is usually necessary.
