Where to watch the 2026 total solar eclipse in Segovia

Segovia is inside the 2026 path of totality — comfortably, though not lavishly. It trades some duration for one of the most spectacular settings anywhere on the track: an aqueduct, an alcázar and the Guadarrama mountains under a totally eclipsed Sun.

Segovia is inside the 2026 path of totality — comfortably, though not lavishly. It trades some duration for one of the most spectacular settings anywhere on the track: an aqueduct, an alcázar and the Guadarrama mountains under a totally eclipsed Sun.

Below: Segovia's exact timings, the viewpoints that actually work for a low western Sun (the famous ones are not always the right ones), the mountain-cloud caveat, and where to go for longer totality.

Le déroulé

Quand l'éclipse a lieu

~19:35 CESTDébut de la phase partielle — première morsure dans le Soleil
~20:31 CESTTotalité — about 1 minute 4 seconds. Lunettes à retirer seulement en cas de totalité.
~21:19 CESTPartial ends near sunset (~21:19 CEST)

Totality is centred on ~20:31 CEST with the Sun only about 8° above the west-northwest horizon, so an open low sightline in that direction matters more than anything else. The Sun sets shortly after, around 21:19.

Les meilleurs endroits pour observer

Mirador de la Pradera de San Marcos

Below the Alcázar · open

Wide view · low horizon

The meadow beneath the Alcázar looks out along the valley where the Eresma and Clamores meet, with the fortress above. It gives open sky to the west without the old town's buildings in the way — the best pairing of scenery and sightline.

Directions

Mirador del Alcázar / Camino de los Molinos

Elevated · classic

Iconic · verify the western view

The paths on the far side of the valley give the postcard view back toward the Alcázar. Superb for photography with the eclipsed Sun in frame — but check which way you will actually be facing, because the classic composition looks east, not west.

Directions

Open country toward Zamarramala

Rural · elevated plain

Clean WNW horizon

Just north-west of Segovia the land opens into bare plateau with the city on the skyline behind you. This is where to go if you want the low Sun unobstructed and are willing to give up the monuments in the foreground.

Directions

North-west toward Valladolid / the central line

Longer totality

Substantially more time

Segovia sits well off the central line and gets appreciably less totality than cities to the north-west. An hour toward Valladolid or Medina del Campo buys a significantly longer total phase.

Directions

Any open west-facing ground outside the walls

The rule that matters

Clear WNW beats a landmark

Segovia's dramatic topography cuts both ways. With the Sun around 8 degrees up, a plain field with an open western view will show you more of the eclipse than a famous viewpoint hemmed in by rock and wall.

Directions

Check the official regional eclipse pages and local council announcements closer to the date — many towns on the path are organising designated viewing sites with capacity limits.

La météo

Le ciel sera-t-il dégagé ?

Segovia has the generally dependable August skies of the meseta, and sits high enough for clean air.

The setting is exceptional — few places offer a skyline like this under totality.

The Guadarrama range lies to the south-east, so it does not block the eclipsed Sun — but mountain-driven afternoon cloud can drift.

The city's own walls and hills are the bigger obstacle: choose your viewpoint by its western outlook.

Planifier la journée

Votre checklist pour le jour de l'éclipse

  • Certified ISO 12312-2 / CE eclipse glasses — one pair per person
  • An open west-northwest horizon — the Sun is only ~8° up
  • Arrive early — totality is only ~1m 04s and won't wait
  • Scout your viewpoint the evening before, at the same time of day
  • Check the cloud forecast in the final 48 hours
  • A hill, ridge or open plain with nothing blocking the WNW
  • Don't spend ~1m 04s of totality fiddling with a camera
  • Glasses back on the instant the Sun's edge returns

FAQ sur l'éclipse en Segovia

Does Segovia get a total solar eclipse on 12 August 2026?
Yes. Segovia is inside the path of totality and sees a genuine total eclipse lasting about 1 minute 4 seconds, with 100% of the Sun covered. Outside the path — even a short distance away — the eclipse is only partial, which is a completely different experience.
What time is the eclipse in Segovia?
The partial phase begins at about 19:35 CEST. Totality is centred on roughly 20:31 CEST, with the Sun about 8° above the west-northwest horizon. The Sun sets at around 21:19 CEST, so the whole event happens low in the evening sky.
Where should I watch from in Segovia?
Because the Sun is only about 8° above the horizon, the single most important thing is an open, unobstructed view to the west-northwest. A building, ridge or treeline in that direction will hide the eclipse entirely, so choose your spot for its western sightline rather than its scenery.
Do I still need eclipse glasses in Segovia?
Yes. Throughout the partial phases — over an hour before and after totality — you must wear certified ISO 12312-2 / CE eclipse glasses. You may remove them only during the ~1m 04s of totality itself, and must put them back on the instant the Sun's edge reappears.
Does Segovia get the full total eclipse in 2026?
Yes. Segovia is inside the path of totality and sees a genuine total eclipse, though a shorter one than the Castilla y León cities further north-west — it lies nearer the southern edge of the band. Travelling toward Valladolid or Medina del Campo lengthens it considerably.
Will the weather be clear in Segovia on eclipse day?
The inland Castilian meseta has some of the most reliable August skies on the Spanish path — typically hot, dry and clear at this time of year. Late-afternoon build-ups can still occur, and the Sun is low, so a clean western horizon matters as much as the odds.
