Where to watch the 2026 total solar eclipse in Castelló de la Plana
Castelló de la Plana gets a long totality — over a minute and a half — with the Mediterranean at its back and the Sun low over the inland hills. It is one of the better combinations of duration and accessibility on the eastern coast.
Castelló de la Plana gets a long totality — over a minute and a half — with the Mediterranean at its back and the Sun low over the inland hills. It is one of the better combinations of duration and accessibility on the eastern coast.
Below: exact timings for Castelló, why you should look inland rather than out to sea here, the coastal haze caveat, and the nearby options along the Costa del Azahar.
Le déroulé
Quand l'éclipse a lieu
Totality is centred on ~20:31 CEST with the Sun only about 5° above the west-northwest horizon, so an open low sightline in that direction matters more than anything else. The Sun sets shortly after, around 21:00.
Où s'installer
Les meilleurs endroits pour observer
Open ground west of the city, toward the Plana
Rural · flatThe agricultural plain west of Castelló gives exactly what is needed: a flat, open view toward the west-north-west where the eclipsed Sun will be, with the coastal buildings behind you.
DirectionsErmita de la Magdalena / Castell Vell
Elevated · historicThe hermitage on the hill north of the city lifts you above the plain and looks out over it — useful height for clearing the low ground and a historic setting for the event.
DirectionsDesert de les Palmes
Mountain · elevatedThe range behind Benicàssim gives real elevation and long views. Choose a west-facing viewpoint — from the wrong side of the ridge the mountain itself will hide the Sun.
DirectionsGrau de Castelló and the port
Coastal · accessibleThe port district is easy to reach and open, but remember the Sun is inland: face away from the water. The advantage here is space and an unobstructed low skyline.
DirectionsNorth toward Benicarló and the central line
Longer totalityTotality lengthens as you move north up the coast. Benicarló and Vinaròs sit nearer the centre of the path and get a noticeably longer total phase — an easy trip up the coast road.
DirectionsCheck the official regional eclipse pages and local council announcements closer to the date — many towns on the path are organising designated viewing sites with capacity limits.

La météo
Le ciel sera-t-il dégagé ?
The Valencian coast is almost always rain-free in mid-August and Castelló gets a generous totality — among the longest of the coastal cities.
The catch is direction. The Sun sets inland here, over the hills to the west-north-west, not over the sea.
A beachfront spot looking east is the classic mistake; you need an open view the other way.

Votre checklist pour le jour de l'éclipse
- Certified ISO 12312-2 / CE eclipse glasses — one pair per person
- An open west-northwest horizon — the Sun is only ~5° up
- Arrive early — totality is only ~1m 37s and won't wait
- Scout your viewpoint the evening before, at the same time of day
- Check the cloud forecast in the final 48 hours
- A hill, ridge or open plain with nothing blocking the WNW
- Don't spend ~1m 37s of totality fiddling with a camera
- Glasses back on the instant the Sun's edge returns
