Where to watch the 2026 total solar eclipse in Bilbao
Yes — Bilbao is inside the 12 August 2026 path of totality, but only just. The total phase reaches the city at about 20:27 CEST and lasts around 35 seconds, with the Sun low (~8°) in the west-northwest. A short trip west or south turns that brief glimpse into more than a minute.
Bilbao makes it into the 2026 path of totality by a whisker. The Moon's shadow clips the northern edge of the city, giving a genuine — if very brief — total eclipse of about 35 seconds. It is a real corona moment, but it is also a reminder of how sharp the edge of the path is: travel a short way west or south and totality more than doubles.
Below: exactly what Bilbao sees and when, where to stand for the low western Sun, an honest look at the Basque coast's cloud odds, and the nearby spots that turn 35 seconds into over a minute.
The timeline
When the eclipse happens
Totality is centred on ~20:27 CEST with the Sun barely 8° above the west-northwest horizon, so an open low sightline in that direction matters more than anything else. The Sun sets soon after, around 21:26.
Where to set up
The best places to watch
Artxanda
Elevated · funicularThe hill overlooking Bilbao, reached in minutes by the Artxanda funicular. Its height clears the surrounding valley walls and opens a west-northwest sightline down toward the coast — the single most important factor for the low Sun. The obvious in-city choice; it will be busy, so arrive early.
DirectionsDown the Nervión estuary (toward Getxo / Portugalete)
Open toward the coastFollowing the estuary north-west toward Getxo, Las Arenas and the Bizkaia Bridge opens the horizon toward the sea and the setting Sun. Slightly nearer the path edge than central Bilbao but with a much cleaner low western sightline — a good balance if you want to stay near the city.
DirectionsWest to the Cantabria coast (plan B)
Longer totalityIf you can travel, heading west along the coast into Cantabria more than doubles your totality — Santander sees about 1m 7s. Cabo Mayor in Santander has a clear sea horizon to the west. This is the strongest option for anyone not tied to Bilbao itself.
DirectionsSouth to Castilla y León (plan B)
Longest + clearestInland to the south, the Castilla y León meseta gives both far longer totality (Burgos ~1m 47s) and the clearest August skies of the whole Spanish path — a major advantage over the cloud-prone Basque coast. About 1.5–2 hours' drive from Bilbao.
DirectionsAny open west-facing high ground
The rule that mattersWherever you end up around Bilbao, the deciding factor is a clear, unobstructed horizon to the west-northwest — the Sun is barely 8° up. A hilltop, ridge or coast facing that way beats any famous landmark hemmed in by the valley. Scout it the day before at the same time of evening.
DirectionsBilbao has no single official viewing point published; the neighbouring Cantabria (turismodecantabria.com) and Castilla y León (jcyl.es/eclipse) networks cover the nearby longer-totality areas, and Spain.info runs a national eclipse hub.

The weather call
Will the sky be clear?
Weather is the real gamble in Bilbao. The Basque coast sits under frequent Atlantic cloud and sea haze even in August, and with the Sun only 8° up, a bank of low cloud on the western horizon can hide the whole event.
There is no coastal-horizon advantage here to offset it, so the forecast matters enormously.
The safeguard is mobility. Prospects improve sharply inland once the Cordillera blocks the Atlantic moisture, so keep a fallback to the south (the meseta) or plan to chase a gap in the cloud.
Watch the marine-layer and cloud forecast hard in the final 24–48 hours.
Plan the day
Your eclipse-day checklist
- Certified ISO 12312-2 / CE eclipse glasses — one pair per person
- An open west-northwest horizon — the Sun is only ~8° up
- A fallback west (Cantabria) or south (meseta) if cloud threatens
- Arrive early at Artxanda or any viewpoint — space is limited
- Check the coastal cloud and sea-haze forecast in the final 48 hours
- A hill, ridge or open estuary view with nothing blocking the WNW
- Remember totality is only ~35s — don't spend it fiddling with a camera
- Glasses back on the instant the Sun's edge returns
