Where to watch the 2026 total solar eclipse in Keflavík & Reykjanes
The Reykjanes peninsula gets the best of Iceland's 2026 eclipse: a long totality with the Sun a full 25 degrees above the horizon — dramatically higher than anywhere in Spain — and open Atlantic horizons in every direction. Cloud is the only real enemy.
The Reykjanes peninsula gets the best of Iceland's 2026 eclipse: a long totality with the Sun a full 25 degrees above the horizon — dramatically higher than anywhere in Spain — and open Atlantic horizons in every direction. Cloud is the only real enemy.
Below: Keflavík's exact timings, why a high Sun changes everything about where you can stand, an honest read on Icelandic August cloud, and how to plan a mobile eclipse day.
The timeline
When the eclipse happens
Totality is centred on ~17:48 GMT with the Sun only about 25° above the west-northwest horizon, so an open low sightline in that direction matters more than anything else. The Sun sets shortly after, around 21:55.
Where to set up
The best places to watch
Garðskagi lighthouse, Garður
Headland · open oceanThe northern tip of the peninsula offers open ocean views across a wide arc and one of the best all-round horizons in the area — a classic Icelandic viewing spot with easy road access.
DirectionsReykjanesviti and Valahnúkur
Cliffs · dramaticIceland's oldest lighthouse stands above dramatic sea cliffs at the south-western tip, with unbroken Atlantic horizons and volcanic landscape underfoot.
DirectionsSandgerði coast road
Coastal · accessibleThe western coast road offers numerous pull-offs with open sea views and room to set up — practical, and easy to relocate along if cloud moves in.
DirectionsKleifarvatn and the interior lakes
Inland · alternative weatherThe lakes inland on the peninsula sit under a slightly different microclimate from the coast, which can matter enormously on a cloudy day. A genuine alternative rather than just scenery.
DirectionsBe mobile on the day
The real strategyIn Iceland the viewpoint matters far less than the cloud. With the Sun 25 degrees up you have freedom Spain does not — so keep the car fuelled, watch the satellite imagery on the day, and be ready to drive to clear sky.
DirectionsCheck the official regional eclipse pages and local council announcements closer to the date — many towns on the path are organising designated viewing sites with capacity limits.

The weather call
Will the sky be clear?
Reykjanes has one enormous advantage: the Sun is about 25 degrees up at totality. Terrain, buildings and horizon haze simply do not matter here the way they do in Spain — you can watch from almost anywhere with open sky.
The compensating problem is cloud. Iceland in August is frequently overcast and conditions change quickly.
The answer is mobility: the peninsula has good roads, so plan to drive to a gap in the cloud on the day.
Plan the day
Your eclipse-day checklist
- Certified ISO 12312-2 / CE eclipse glasses — one pair per person
- An open west-northwest horizon — the Sun is only ~25° up
- Arrive early — totality is only ~1m 43s and won't wait
- Scout your viewpoint the evening before, at the same time of day
- Check the cloud forecast in the final 48 hours
- A hill, ridge or open plain with nothing blocking the WNW
- Don't spend ~1m 43s of totality fiddling with a camera
- Glasses back on the instant the Sun's edge returns
